Careers at ONC

ONC, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is helping to transform the nation’s healthcare system through policies, programs, and investments. Our vision is “better health enabled by data,” which means all our work helps to advance the use and sharing of electronic health information to improve healthcare outcomes.

Created by executive order in 2004, we have made big strides in improving health care through market-shifting policies and initiatives that have dramatically changed how we share and use health information.

To help make an impact on health care through technology, come work at ONC! We seek to attract and develop skilled professionals in the standards, technology, policy, and healthcare fields. As a relatively young agency, we value a flexible and high-performing culture that welcomes new ideas and perspectives. Our strength is our willingness to take on big challenges through innovation and resourcefulness.

Eligibility

The federal government uses a system for categorizing and defining jobs. A ‘grade’ refers to the General Schedule (GS) pay scale. It indicates the pay level for the job/position. If you haven’t worked for the federal government yet, you may not be sure what grade you fall into. The table below will provide some guidance.

GradeLevel of Education Required
GS-031 academic year above high school
GS-042 academic years above high school OR an Associate’s degree
GS-054 academic years of post high school education leading to a bachelor’s degree or equivalent degree
GS-071 full academic year of graduate level education OR eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision of bachelor’s degree
GS-092 full academic years of graduate level education, OR a master’s degree or equivalent graduate degree
GS-11PhD or equivalent degree

For specific salaries by grade and locality, please visit OPM’s website and view their GS Pay Tables for the applicable year.
