What Is Accelerated Disposition?
Accelerated disposition is GSA’s plan to quickly find, prepare, and sell or transfer federal buildings that are empty or underused. GSA plans ahead, assigns staff, and markets these properties to speed up the process. Throughout this work, GSA stays in close contact with the agencies and communities involved.
Donating Real Estate to Humanitarian Causes
Beyond sale and transfer, GSA also considers donating surplus real property for humanitarian purposes. Eligible nonprofit organizations, states, and local governments may receive suitable federal buildings and land at little or no cost to support uses such as homeless assistance, education, public health, and other community service programs. This approach helps put underused federal real estate to work for the public good while advancing GSA’s broader goal of reducing the government’s real estate footprint.

Frequently Asked Questions About Real Property Disposition
Why is this list shorter than earlier lists?
GSA now publishes lists of properties in a more careful, measured way. Earlier lists included properties at an earlier stage of review. As GSA completes more analysis, the list is updated to make sure each property has the right review and coordination before it is posted. GSA will keep updating this list as it works to right-size the federal real estate portfolio.
Does a shorter list mean GSA’s approach to disposal has changed?
No. GSA is still committed to reducing the federal footprint and disposing of properties it does not need. What has changed is how GSA sequences and publishes properties, not GSA’s policy or direction. GSA regularly reviews properties based on factors like use, condition, cost of alternative space, and mission needs.
How quickly will these buildings become available?
Accelerated disposition means GSA plans ahead, assigns dedicated staff, and uses targeted marketing to speed up the sale or transfer of a property. GSA also coordinates any needed tenant moves. GSA works to dispose of these properties as quickly as possible, while still meeting legal requirements and agency mission needs.
When are the agencies using a property told about the plan?
GSA tells all affected agencies before it publishes a property list. GSA continues to work closely with these agencies to make sure their staff have safe, comfortable, and efficient workspace throughout the process.
